Army defeated KVC Hounds by a score of 107-79 in the opening match of the league organized by the Nepal Basketball Association (NEBA) at the Covered Hall of Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwor on Tuesday.
Army won the match by leading 29-17 in the first quarter, 24-22 in the second quarter, 28-21 in the third quarter and 23-19 in the fourth quarter. Army's Nischal Maharjan scored the most points with 27. He was declared the Most Valuable Player of the match.
Army, which did not participate in the first edition, has made a strong start this time. In the second edition, Army played the qualifying tournament and won the title and qualified for the HJNBL.
In the second match, Golden Gate Club defeated the defending champion Times Club 92-75. In the first edition of the final, Times defeated Golden Gate to win the title.
Times started well by leading 25-18 in the first quarter. But Golden Gate took the lead 25-19 in the second quarter and 30-10 in the third quarter to take a 73-54 lead. Even though Times scored 21-19 in the fourth quarter, it was not enough to win.
Nikesh Magar of Golden Gate scored the highest score of 37 in the game. He was declared the Most Valuable Player.
The National Sports Council Member-Secretary Ramcharitra Mehta inaugurated the basketball league.
