Tottenham Hotspur were beaten 3-1 by Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Thursday, but manager Igor Tudor believes his north London club can avoid relegation. Tottenham took the lead at home thanks to Dominic Solanke's goal.
But Mickey van de Ven was sent off for a foul on Ismail Sarr. The game then turned in Palace's favour. Sarr scored the first goal from the penalty spot. Jurgen Strand Larsen then added a second and Sarr scored the third.
The result leaves Tottenham 16th, just one point above the relegation zone. Tottenham have won just one of their last 13 home games. Tottenham are now in danger of being relegated for the first time since 1977/78.
Tudor is still only an interim coach, but there are already calls for him to be sacked. He took over after Thomas Frank was sacked and Tottenham have lost all three games since then. But the Croatian coach claims that the way Tottenham played in the second half against Palace shows that Tottenham is not broken, but is still in the process of doing so.
His analysis of his game is, ‘It was two halves in one game. The game changed after the red card. But we tried our best in the second half. Like all club supporters, I am very disappointed with the result. Of course, we have to work harder. I may surprise many people, but after this defeat, I have more confidence in the team. The same intention was also seen in the dressing room after the defeat.’
Tottenham has conceded two or more goals in the last nine league games for the first time in club history. Similarly, Tottenham has lost in the last five games. And Tottenham haven't won 11 consecutive top-flight games since 1975. Tudor is now keen to ignore all of this. He believes there is still strength, hope and struggle left in the team.
When he was given the club, Tudor said Tottenham would be 100% sure of avoiding relegation. But the situation has become really precarious after losing matches against London teams Arsenal, Fulham and now Palace. Tottenham have only been out of the top division for one season since 1950. They now have nine games to avoid relegation, the first of which is a trip to Liverpool on March 15.
Then they have the most crucial game ahead of them, a match against Nottingham Forest, who are struggling to avoid relegation. Tottenham striker Solanki also believes that a 'crisis' meeting was held among the players after the match against Palace. He added, 'We have talked about it at length. We are in a situation now where we definitely don't want to be. We want to get out of that situation as soon as possible. You know, it's not easy.'
