South Africa captain Aiden Markram has said that the group stage win against New Zealand will not have any meaning in the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup, calling it a “completely new beginning”.

South Africa and New Zealand will meet in the first semi-final in Kolkata on Wednesday. Neither team has won the World Cup yet. Of the four teams that have reached the semi-finals, South Africa is the only unbeaten team in the tournament. The team defeated New Zealand by seven wickets in the group stage match in Ahmedabad on February 15.

“We played well against them in the group stage, but both teams have played a lot of games since then,” said captain Markram. “The semi-final will be a completely new game and it will be exciting because there is a chance to reach the final. So I don’t think it will be a group stage game. We will give our best.” He added, “Whether we are contenders or not is a matter for different people. We are focused on playing a good game, that is the game we have been trying to play for the last 18 months.’ Under Markram’s captaincy

South Africa have won 15 of their 16 World Cup matches. Their only defeat was to India in the World Cup final two years ago.

‘We have senior players in the team, we depend on them. If there is any hesitation, they help us to get the ball rolling,’ said Markram. ‘I think that is why we have been able to build a good team over the past few years. Fortunately, it is being implemented, it is being used within the team as well.’
