What you should know

Born in Thulibheri Municipality-5 in the Himalayan district of Dolpa, Bimal Rokaya's passion for sports is captivating. At just 29 years old, he is also a national taekwondo player and coach.

Due to his deep love for taekwondo, he has won all three types of medals by performing excellently in more than two dozen international competitions at a young age. He has gold, silver and bronze medals around his neck.

Bimal, who grew up in a remote place like Dolpa, runs a sports academy in Hattivan. His elder brother, Suvarna Rokaya, is a boxing player. Bimal says that he got into sports because of his brother's inspiration. He had a strong desire to become a player since he was a child, having trained in karate in school. That is why, after moving to Kathmandu for higher education, he started devoting time to learning taekwondo along with his studies.

'I had a love for sports since I was a child. After coming to Kathmandu, I started learning taekwondo at the dojang of the Dasharath Stadium in Tripureshwor,' said Bimal. 'I also took additional training in Lalitpur. "Because of my passion, I have had the opportunity to participate in more than two dozen national and international competitions at a young age," he says, "I have won gold, silver and bronze medals by performing excellently in countries such as India, Thailand, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia. This is a great opportunity and success for me."

He won gold in the martial arts competition held in Lalitpur in 2015. He won bronze in the 5th Heroes International Taekwondo Championship held in Thailand in 2019 and silver in the 27th Asian Cities Taekwondo held in Hong Kong in 2023.

He won gold in the Bangabandhu Open International Taekwondo Championship held in Bangladesh in 2023 and the Prime Minister's Cup Taekwondo Championship held in India in 2024. He won silver in the 21st WATA Japan Open Taekwondo Championship held in Osaka, Japan in 2025. He won bronze at the Kukiwan Cup International Taekwondo Championship held in Nepal last year and gold at the 21st Speed Taekwondo Championship held in Malaysia.

He has been running a Taekwondo Academy in Hattivan since 2020 and training players. Taekwondo players are being produced from this academy every year. Having completed the hyperperformance course, he has been teaching Taekwondo at the Machhapuchhre World School in Lalitpur and the Resident School in Dhapakhel along with the academy.

Bimal, who has been active in Taekwondo for a long time, says that his next goal is to produce players. He is saddened by the fact that he was not able to further his formal education beyond grade 12 due to his great dedication to Taekwondo. Bimal, who was selected from Karnali Province in the 9th National Games and reached Pokhara, was suddenly ill and could not play in the competition. He had set a goal of playing in the 10th National Games, which was supposed to be held in Karnali Province, and is disappointed that the competition was not held on time. The 10th National Games are being postponed repeatedly, making the organization uncertain.
