The third university sports competition organized by the National Sports Council (NSC) began on Thursday at the Kathmandu University campus in Dhulikhel.

Tribhuvan University won a double title in 3-on-3 basketball on the first day. Tribhuvan University became the champion in both men's and women's categories.

In the men's final, Tribhuvan University defeated Purbanchal University by a score of 21-9. In the women's final, Tribhuvan University defeated Kathmandu University by a score of 15-4. In the men's final, Sudurpaschimanchal University and Purbanchal University finished third in the women's final.

In the men's singles of table tennis, Himal Bista and Sujan Gadal of Tribhuvan University, Shrijal Suwal of Purbanchal University and Ayush Bam of Sudurpaschimanchal University reached the semifinals. In the women's final, Biyanka Rai and Yongi Poudel of Tribhuvan University and Asma Pandey and Swasti Pradhan of Kathmandu University made it to the semifinals.

In the men's singles badminton, Kshitij Khanal and Narendra Bam of Tribhuvan University, Dipris Bajracharya of Tribhuvan University and Thanu Sikka Guna Ordena of Kathmandu managed to reach the semifinals. In the women's singles, Rashila Maharjan and Bhuvan Khetan of Tribhuvan University and Prasuna Khatri and Bipika of Kathmandu made it to the semifinals.

In the men's volleyball, Kathmandu defeated Lumbini Buddhist University 3-1, Madhya Paschim University defeated Sudurpaschimanchal 3-0, and Tribhuvan University defeated Gandaki University 3-0 to reach the semifinals. Purbanchal defeated Krishi 3-1 to reach the quarterfinals.

Earlier, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Loknath Paudyal inaugurated the tournament and expressed the view that sports should be considered as a pillar of the country's economic growth in developed countries.

NSC Member-Secretary Ramcharitra Mehta said that the attraction of university sports is increasing and expressed his commitment to refine the competition in the coming days.   

Kathmandu University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Achyut Wagle reminded that sports are a symbol of national unity.  Kamal Bahadur Bhattarai, member of the NSC Executive Committee and competition coordinator, said that the scope of university sports is expanding as we approach the third edition. 

The competition, co-organized by Kathmandu University and Nepalaya International and sponsored by KIES Education Consultancy, includes 5 sports: athletics, badminton, table tennis, basketball (three by three) and volleyball.  279 players from 9 different universities are participating in the two-day competition.  Only the male side will compete in volleyball.  Former national table tennis champion Shivsundar Gothe took the oath as a judge and Dipendra Awasthi as a player.
