Bhuvan Nagarkoti took the lead on the first day of the Surya Nepal NPGA Tour Championship on Tuesday. Bhuvan shot a brilliant 5-under 67 in the first round at the par-72 Mithila Nagri Army Golf Club in Bardibas to take a two-stroke lead.
Bhuwan Kumar Rokka is in second place with a 3-under 69. Suman Rai and Dhan Bahadur Thapa are in joint third place with a 1-under 71. Tanka Bahadur Karki finished the day in fifth place with an even-par 72. Amateur Prakrit Tamang, Pro Ramesh Adhikari, Neeraj Tamang and Dinesh Prajapati shared joint sixth place with a 1-over 73. Shivaram Poudel, Ravi Khadka, Suman Pariyar and Pradeep Kumar Lama are in tenth place with a 2-over 74.
Former Nepal number one Pro Bhuwan, who is at the top, shot a front nine of 3-under 33 and a back nine of 2-under 34 to score an overall score of 5-under 67. He birdied the second, fourth, seventh and ninth holes but missed a shot on the eighth hole. After this, he birdied the 11th and 16th holes while playing a bogey-free back nine.
Bhuvan Rokka played the front nine at even-par 36 and the back nine at 3-under 33. He birdied the first, third and seventh holes but bogeyed the second, fifth and ninth holes. On the back nine, he made three consecutive birdies at the 13th, 14th and 15th holes. Suman Rai played the front nine at 2-over 38 but made a great comeback at 3-under 33 on the back nine. He bogeyed the first, fifth and sixth holes. He saved a shot on the eighth hole. After playing a bogey-free back nine, he birdied the 11th hole and got an eagle on the 18th hole.
Dhan Bahadur Thapa played the front nine at 1-over 37 with a birdie on the fourth hole against bogeys on the third and ninth holes. After this, he saved shots on the 10th and 17th holes. He finished the back nine at 2-under 34.
In the amateur category, young golfer Prakrit Tamang played 1 over 73 to edge Sundar Rai by two strokes. Sundar played 3 over 75. Bharat Tamang is in third place with 9 over 81.
36 players, including 30 pros and 6 amateurs, are competing in the 54-hole tournament sponsored by Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. organized by Nepal PGA. The cut will be implemented after the second round. The top 18 pro and amateur golfers will make it to the final round.
Earlier, Madhesh Province Sports and Social Development Minister Basant Kumar Kushwaha inaugurated the tournament by making a putt on hole number 9.
