The 15th Khumbu Lhosar Cup Football Tournament, organized by the Hendra Jyoti Alumni Forum, Farak (Solukhumbu), is scheduled to be held from Magh 24 to Falgun 3.

The tournament will feature eight teams, including the organizer, Pembachiri Sherpa, general secretary of the organizing forum, informed a press conference on Tuesday.

The participating teams include the organizer Mahendrajyoti, Namche Youth Group, Khumjung Youth Group, Khunde Community Club, Thamichhowa Football Club Thame, Amadblam Youth Group Pangboche, Khumbu Yangbu Sherpa Society and Khumbu United. The participating teams will be divided into two groups and played on a league-cum-knockout basis.

The top three teams in the tournament, which will be held on the occasion of Lhosar (New Year), the main festival of the Sherpa community, will receive Rs 150,000, Rs 80,000 and Rs 40,000 respectively, informed Furi Sherpa, vice-chairman of the organizing forum. The best players in each category will be given cash prizes and gift hampers.

Organizing Forum Chairman Fur Gelje Sherpa said that the tournament played an important role in uniting the communities within Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality through football, adding that the Lhosar festival and football tournament have been established as a common festival that connects the youth and the community.

The main sponsor of the tournament is 14 Peaks Expedition Pvt. Ltd., co-sponsors are Heli Everest Pvt. Ltd. and Khumbu Pasang Rural Municipality, while various organizations will also support, said General Secretary Sherpa. The game will be played at the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) Complex in Satdobato.

Sherpa youths, born in various villages of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu and currently residing in Kathmandu, started this football tournament on the occasion of Lhosar in 2009 with the aim of making good use of their leisure time during the winter. The tournament also aims to help promote tourism in the Khumbu region through sports.
