The 4th Mount Everest International Taekwondo Championship (WT G1) and the 2nd Mount Everest GCS International Poomsae Championship (WT G1) are scheduled to be held from Falgun 1.

The competition organized by the Nepal Taekwondo Association will feature around 1,500 athletes from 20 countries.

Taekwondo Association Vice President Bhan Bahadur Chand informed a press conference on Sunday that around 500 of the foreign athletes will be Indians. “Since taekwondo is a ranked competition, athletes from various national teams will come to play with an eye on the Olympics,” Chand said.

The organizers say that athletes from countries including Nepal and India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, Chile, Singapore, Morocco, Kenya, Japan, Thailand, Portugal, Australia, Egypt, and others will participate in the competition.

Foreign athletes will have to travel and stay at their own expense. The Taekwondo Association will have to pay a fee of $10,000 to World Taekwondo for organizing the competition. Foreign athletes will have to pay a fee of $80 to participate, while Nepali athletes will pay a fee of $6,000. Similarly, 40 foreign judges will also come, the organizers said.

A total of 74 gold medals will be competed for in Gerogi (fight) and Poomsae (form). Both categories will be competed in weight groups from Cadet (12-14 years) to Senior (18 and above). Nepali players who are undergoing special training for Mission-2026 being run by the National Sports Council (NSC) will also participate in the competition, said Kumar Lama Ghising, a member of the organizing association. The competition is open to players other than the national team.

Vice President Chand said that it will cost about 30 million to run the competition. To successfully complete the competition, a main organizing committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Prakash Shumsher Rana, chairman of the advisory council of the organizing association and former president of the Taekwondo Association, and 13 different sub-committees have also been formed. The games of the 6-day competition will be played at the covered hall of NSC in Tripureshwor.

The first edition of the Mount Everest International Taekwondo, which is to be held every 2 years, was held in 2011 and the second edition in 2013. Then the third edition was held in Pokhara in 2022. Stating that the competition could not be held regularly due to various natural disasters, Vice President Chand said, "Now we will organize the competition continuously."
