The volleyball ‘craze’ under the skies of Pokhara is always high. However, the ‘Ncell 6th Tiger Cup’, which will begin at the Pokhara Stadium on Friday, is giving this craze a new height. The sweat of the players produced in the fertile land of volleyball, Gandaki, and the hooting of volleyball lovers, are sure to heat up Pokhara until Magh 17.

The national and international invitational open club championship organized by Tiger Group of Pokhara Nepal will showcase the skills of the national game volleyball and the challenge of the international team.

This time, the competition is not just a sports festival, but also a strong effort to ‘brand’ Nepali volleyball at the international level.

According to Tiger Group President Narayan Prasad Sharma, the foundation of this competition is rooted in the deep love for volleyball.

‘We were really sports enthusiasts, who were very close to volleyball,’ he recalls, ‘The PN Campus ground gave us a lot. We formed a group to repay that debt and make volleyball a brand.’

He says that the name of the organization ‘Tiger’ is a symbol of Nepali religious faith and power. ‘The vehicle of Goddess Bhagwati, who is worshipped during Dashain, is the tiger. A tiger is a brave and strong creature, which once it starts a job, can reach the end,' he said, 'imbibing this courage, we have named it Tiger Group of Pokhara.'

The entire team including Provincial Assembly Member Prakash Baral, Competition Coordinator Rajkumar Gurung, Devendra KC, Hari Shrestha, DB Nepali, Yam Gurung, Chhyam Thapa and others have been working day and night in this campaign.

The attraction of the Tiger Cup is different and grander than the previous editions. The national team of Maldives for men and the team of Thailand for women will show their magic on the Pokhareli court. Chairman Sharma says that the arrival of the foreign team will provide an opportunity for Nepali players to learn new techniques and strategies.

A total of 11 teams, 6 for men and 5 for women, will participate in the competition. Nepal Police Club, APF, Tribhuvan Army and Tiptop New Diamond Youth Sports Club, along with Thailand Queens, will participate in the women's tournament.

The organizers have stated that the Maldives national team, Gandaki Province Volleyball Association, Nepal Police Club, APF, Tribhuvan Army and Parbat District Volleyball Association will compete in the men's category. The Parbat team has participated in the competition with players from Tiptop Help Nepal. To make the competition dispute-free, an international referee will be deployed this time, said Gandaki Province Volleyball Association General Secretary and International Referee Tahal Singh Thapa.

The organizers have increased the prize money this time. The same prize has been arranged for women and men. The first prize is 666,666 rupees, the second prize is 366,666 rupees and the third prize is 266,666 rupees. The best player will receive 26,666 rupees and the category winner will receive 11,666 rupees each.

The main sponsor of the competition is Ncell, while Vatsalya and Dhara Toriko Tel are co-sponsors. The organizers have stated that they have the support of organizations and individuals including Kantipur Television HD and Sushree Media Pvt. Ltd., Extreme Energy Drink as special partners. The tournament will be broadcast live on Kantipur Television.

'We will build the Tiger Cup brand': Narayan Prasad Sharma, President, Tiger Group of Pokhara

With volleyball becoming a national sport, we have reached the sixth edition today. Ncell has been supporting us as the main sponsor since the fifth edition. Since Gandaki Province is a fertile land for volleyball, many national players have been produced from this court. As we have reached the sixth edition, we have tried to establish it as a brand by making it time and technology friendly.

This time, we have also improved the physical structure. Permanent and temporary parapets have been added to make the seating arrangements for the spectators more comfortable and relaxed. We have brought in international referees to make the game dispute-free, which is expected to reduce technical errors and disputes.

The Maldives men's national team and Thailand women's team are participating in the ranking. Our main objective is for Nepali players to learn the playing style, strategy and position of foreign players by watching them closely. We are determined to raise the level of Nepali volleyball by bringing in even better teams.

Talking about the financial aspect is a complex issue. Maintaining transparency in that is even more important. But I am happy that a three-year agreement has been signed with Tiger Group Pokhara as the first party, Kantipur Media Group as the second party and Sushri Media Pvt. Ltd. as the third party. Even when the country's economic situation is in a shambles, various corporate houses and supporting hands have believed in the Tiger Cup and have spontaneously supported it. The federal, provincial and local governments are also supporting it.

Pokhara should now also be made the capital of sports. Volleyball also has a role to play in that. Including volleyball in the school curriculum to develop it from the grassroots and allocating budget from the beginning will greatly help in infrastructure development. We are taking a planned approach to making volleyball systematic and professional.
