The first Martyrs Cup football tournament is set to be held in Mikwakhola Rural Municipality.
The competition is being organized by the Young Communist League (YCL) Mikwakhola Rural Municipality Committee, a fraternal organization of former Maoists, on the occasion of Martyrs' Day. The inter-municipal level football competition will be held from 16 to 21 Magh. The winner will receive 151,000 rupees and the runner-up will receive 111,000 rupees, along with a trophy, medal and certificate. Eight municipalities in the district will participate in the competition. The competition will be held at Mikwakhola-4 Thalang Sports Ground, informed Sports Coordinator Randhwaj Thalang. Although it is an inter-municipal level competition, up to 3 players from outside the municipality can play, the organizers have said.
Mikwakhola Rural Municipality Vice-Chairman Dandu Sherpa said that the competition is being organized to commemorate the first martyr of Taplejung, Narendra Thalang (Sidman), and the martyrs of Mikwakhola Rural Municipality during the 10-year 'People's War' and to promote tourism in the municipality through sports.
