Second-seeded Italian Yannick Sinner began his campaign to win the Australian Open for the third time on Tuesday, comfortably advancing to the second round.

The Italian player was leading 6-2, 6-1 against his French opponent Hugo Gaston when the match was stopped. Gaston could not continue the match due to a stomach injury. After the match, the two-time winner said that he did not expect such a victory. He said, "I expected a big challenge at the beginning and I also presented myself aggressively in this match."

If he wins the title in Melbourne for the third time in a row, he will equal the achievement of Serbian Novak Djokovic in the history of modern tennis. On the other hand, Monfils said goodbye after the defeat. He was defeated by Australian Dan Swanepoel 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 7-5. The match lasted nearly four hours. He is 39 years old. He is retiring from his playing career at the end of this year.

Monfils addressed the audience, saying, “Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey so far. Once you start playing, you have to take a day off.” He has won a total of 13 ATP titles in his playing career. Monfils, who started playing since 2004, announced his retirement plans just two months ago.

In other matches on the day, fifth-seeded Lorenzo Musetti of Italy also reached the second round. Lorenzo advanced after Belgium’s Rafa Colliton withdrew due to injury. American Ben Selton, the eighth seed and a semifinalist last year, defeated Frenchman Hugo Humbert 6-3, 7-6, 7-6. Similarly, rising 19-year-old Brazilian player Joao Fonseca lost 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 to American elite Spizziri.

Former women's world number one Osaka entered Rod Laver Arena wearing a white dress for the final match of the day. The 28-year-old Japanese player is known for her fashion sense on and off the court. She surprised the audience when she entered the court wearing a white umbrella and a white hat. 

Two-time champion Osaka defeated Croatia's Antonia Ruzic 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. In the other match, American Madison Key defeated Ukraine's Oleksandr Olyakova 7-6 (8/6), 6-1. She won despite losing the first four games. Unseeded Indonesian Janice Janet defeated 22nd seed Leyla Fernandez of Canada 6-2, 7-6 (7/1).

Chinese star Zhang Shuai and American Saloni Stephens were among the first-round losers, while fifth-seeded Kazakhstani Elina Rebkina, 10th-seeded Ukrainian Belinda Bencic, 24th-seeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko and Russian Anna Kalinskaya all won their first-round matches in Melbourne.
