The D&D Amateur Golf Championship will begin on Sunday at the Dharan Golf Club.
The two-day championship is being sponsored by Dharan golfers Devkumar Rai and Dipendra Rai, who are working in the British Army. This championship is expected to have special significance in the history of Nepali golf. This is the first time that a cash prize competition is being held for amateur golfers. Therefore, it can become a new chapter in Nepali golf. The total prize money of the competition is 200,000 rupees.
Organized with the aim of promoting amateur golf and providing financial support to emerging golfers, this championship is open to amateur golfers with a handicap of 9 or less. There will be a total of 38 players in 36 holes. The competition will be held in stroke play format.
The winner will receive 50,000 and the runner-up 30,000. The players who secure the third, fourth and fifth places will win 24,000, 20,000 and 16,000 respectively. Players who finish in the top 10 positions will receive cash.
Sponsor Dev Kumar Rai said that the championship was launched with the aim of contributing to the development of amateur golf in Nepal. He said that amateur golfers usually only receive trophies, so it cannot reduce the financial burden, and expressed confidence that the cash prize would help the players and motivate them to play the game.
Another sponsor, Dipendra Rai, said that the long-term goal is to raise the level of amateur golfers, enable them to represent the country at the international level, and enable them to become professional players in the future and earn a living through the game. He also informed that he is committed to organizing this tournament continuously for at least 5 years.
Stating that there is a strong golf community among the Nepali diaspora in the UK, he said that he aims to transform this championship into a national-level competition in the future. According to him, he also informed that consultations will be held with the concerned bodies regarding expanding the competition outside Dharan in the coming year.
Nepal Golf Association will provide technical support for the competition.
