Nepal's number one golfer Neeraj Tamang has defended his Surya Nepal Eastern Open title. Neeraj carded a 3-under 67 in the third and final round at the par-70 Dharan Golf Club on Friday.
Neeraj managed to defend his title by scoring an impressive 15-under 195 in the 54-hole match. He won the fourth title of his career, beating amateur golfer Rahul Vishwakarma by 6 strokes. Neeraj received Rs 1,70,000.
Rahul finished second overall with a total score of 9-under 201, shooting 2-under 68. He won the amateur title. Experienced pro Balbhadra Rai finished second in the professional category with an excellent performance of 5-under 65 on the last day, shooting 6-under 204. Balbhadra received Rs 1,25,000.
Dinesh Prajapati finished third in the pro category and fourth overall with a score of 4-under 206. He received Rs 1,00,000 for his final round of 3-under 69. Tanka Bahadur Karki (71) and former Nepal number one pro Bhuvan Nagarkoti (69) shared the joint fourth place in the pro category with a score of 3 under 207 and both received Rs 77,000.
Ravi Khadka managed to win Rs 64,000 by finishing in sixth place in the professional category with a score of 1 under 209. Shukra Bahadur Rai, who played in the leader group, shot 4 over 74 in the final round and dropped to eighth place with an even par of 210. He received Rs 57,000.
In the pro category, Suman Pariyar (69) finished in eighth place with a total score of 2 over 212, while Sanjay Lama (68) finished in ninth place with an overall score of 213 and Sunil KC (74) finished in tenth place with a score of 218. They received Rs 51,000, 46,000 and 42,000 respectively. The professional players in the top 18 received cash prizes. On the second day of the tournament, Prof. Jayaram Shrestha, who made a hole-in-one on the 14th hole, received a prize of 5,000.
In the amateur category, Padmahang Limbu finished runner-up with a final score of 211 after shooting 3-under 69. Sundar Rai (68) finished third with a score of 213 on 3-over 213.
Winner Neeraj shot consecutive birdies on the second, third and fourth holes to finish 3-under 33 on the front nine. On the back nine, he made bogeys on the 10th, 13th, 14th and 15th holes and birdies on the 11th, 12th, 16th and 18th holes to finish even par 34. Rahul played 2-under 34 on the front nine with birdies on the third, sixth and ninth holes and bogey on the seventh hole. A bogey on the 11th hole and a birdie on the 18th hole made the back nine even par 34.
Local pro Balbhadra shot eight birdies to finish 2-under 34 on the front nine and 3-under 31 on the back nine. He birdied the second, third, fourth and eighth holes and bogeyed the first and sixth holes. He missed a shot on the 15th hole on the back nine but birdied the 11th, 12th, 17th and 18th holes.
The winners were awarded by Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. Deputy General Manager Keshav Pradhan, Nepal Golf Association Vice President Tilak Rai, Koshi Province Golf Association Vice President Bharat Tamang, Sunsari Golf Association President Jitendra Rai and Dharan Golf Club President Hari Rai. The Pro-Am will be held on Saturday.
