The Himalayan Challengers FIDE Rating Classical Chess Tournament, organized by the Himalayan Chess Academy, began on Sunday.

On the first day of the tournament held at the academy's chess hall in Thapathali, top seed Abhik Shah defeated unrated Surya Pratap Karki to score 1 point.

Sajal Neupane, Hardik Pant, Leon Maharjan, Anmol Rai, Nihana Shrestha, Shubhanga Pradhan, Ariz Rai, Ashirwad Thapa, Abhik Regmi, Prabir KC, Biraj Saria, Satwikman Tuladhar, Ujhivani Kadel and Rohit Shrestha also won.

The academy has organized a classical chess tournament for players under 18 years of age in collaboration with the Kathmandu District Chess Association with the aim of producing young players. The tournament will be held over 9 days in 9 rounds based on the Swiss system, in which players will be given 90 minutes and 30 minutes increments of time in each game.

24 male and 6 female players from 28 schools and colleges are participating in the Himalayan Challengers. The average age of the players is 13 years. There are 14 rated players and 16 unrated players.
