New Diamond Youth Sports Club and defending champion Nepal Police got off to a winning start in the 9th Sher Bahadur Khadka Memorial National Women's Volleyball Tournament on Wednesday, with both teams winning in straight sets of 3-0.
In the inaugural match held at the National Sports Council (NSC) Covered Hall in Tripureshwor, the seventh edition winner New Diamond defeated Nepal Army in straight sets of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-17.
In the next match of the tournament being organized by Sher Bahadur Khadka Memorial Foundation, Balkot, the Police defeated the first six edition winners APF Club in straight sets of 25-22, 25-20 and 25-21. In the first match, Sumitra Regmi of New Diamond and Poonam Chand of Police were declared the ‘Player of the Match’. Both won a cash prize of Rs 15,000 each.
The tournament was inaugurated by NSC Member-Secretary Ramcharitra Mehta. On the occasion, the Foundation honored Sumitra Regmi of New Diamond with the Sher Bahadur Khadka Special Award along with a cash prize of Rs 50,000. Member-Secretary Mehta and Patron of the foundation Gamali Khadka awarded Sumitra.
There will be two matches on Thursday. The first match will be between Police and Army and the second match will be between New Diamond and APF. Four teams are participating in the competition, which will continue till Saturday on a round-robin league basis. The top two teams in the round-robin league will compete again for the title. The remaining two teams will play for the third place.
The winner of the competition, which is being held under the main sponsorship of KNP Nerolake, will receive a cash prize of Rs 500,000, the runner-up Rs 250,000 and the third-placed team Rs 125,000. The first prize is sponsored by Life Insurance Corporation Nepal Limited, the second prize is sponsored by Marble Technoplast Pvt. Ltd. and the third prize is sponsored by Fitness Choice.
The best player will be given a cash prize of Rs 50,000. This award is sponsored by Highlife. The 7 best players in each category will be awarded with a cash prize of 25 thousand rupees each. The organizer has stated that the 'Player of the Match' of each game will be awarded a cash prize of 15 thousand rupees.
