A sports competition has been held in Dhangadhi targeting the physical, mental, and emotional development of girls and adolescents with disabilities.

The sports event was organized by Access Planet and in collaboration with Girls Opportunity Alliance at Trinagar Secondary School, Dhangadhi. Speaking at the event, Minister of State for Social Development Saraswati Khadka assured that all three levels of government, including the federal, provincial and local governments, are committed to supporting people with disabilities. She said that girls and adolescents with disabilities should showcase their potential through sports. She is committed to organizing a provincial-level sports competition for all age groups, keeping in mind people with disabilities, within the current fiscal year.

'The Far West Province is becoming a hub for sports,' she said. 'We should monitor all schools once and discuss extensively what each school needs and move forward collectively.'

Arjun Rawal, General Secretary of the Central Office of the Blind Youth Association Nepal and President of the Nepal Blind Association Sudurpaschim Province, said that coordination between the federal, provincial and local governments needs to be strengthened to work effectively in the sports sector.

He emphasized that the participation of persons with disabilities should not be limited to attendance at programs but should be made mandatory in policy formulation, budget allocation and implementation. He said that specialized sports plans should be formulated for persons with visual and other types of disabilities in municipal-level sports programs including the President's Cup and Running Shield.

Manisha Rana, President of Access Planet Kailali, said that sports are an effective medium for the overall development of girls and adolescents with disabilities. 'Such sports also strengthen confidence and emotional unity along with physical development,' she said.

Sports competition for girls with disabilities in Dhangadhi

Girls from Sambalavi, Dakshinkali and Panchodaya Secondary Schools participated in the competition. Four types of sports were played in the competition: high jump, long jump, soft ball and running.

The first place winner in the competition was awarded a cash prize of Rs 3,000, a medal and a certificate, the second place winner was awarded a cash prize of Rs 2,500, a medal and a certificate, and the third place winner was awarded a cash prize of Rs 2,000, a medal and a certificate. Other participants were also awarded consolation certificates.
