The seventh Mayor's Cup Lalitpur Metropolitan City Inter-ward Table Tennis Competition, organized by Ward 6 of Lalitpur Metropolitan City, is set to begin on Sunday.

The competition will feature 616 players in 17 events, said the chairman of the organizing ward 6, Rupendra Raj Shakya, at a press conference on Friday. Competitors from 21 out of 29 wards of Lalitpur Metropolitan City will participate. One category has been added to this edition. The open local public representative category has been added.

The total prize money for the competition, organized by the Lalitpur District Table Tennis Association, is Rs 425,000, informed Technical Chief Nikesh Joshi. Cash prizes have been given in all 17 categories.

Chairman Shakya said that the competition was held with the aim of providing opportunities to players and producing new players.

According to the organizers, about Rs 2.9 million will be spent to run the competition. Chairman Shakya said that the budget will be managed with the support of Lalitpur Metropolitan City and various associations within the ward.

Former table tennis head coach of the National Sports Council, Rajendra Kapali, said that this competition has a special significance because it is held at night.

Competition coordinator Ashish Awale, who is also the president of the Lalitpur District Table Tennis Association, said that six boards will be used to play the game with mats spread out. The night-time week-long competition will be played at the host ward in Kanibahal.
