A volleyball tournament with the highest prize money in the district has begun in Arughat Rural Municipality-9.
Arughat Youth Club will organize a volleyball tournament from Tuesday to Poush 5. A Gandaki Province-level inter-municipal men's volleyball and open club/municipal women's volleyball tournament is being held, said Arughat Youth Club coordinator Sobit Shrestha. Twelve teams are participating in the men's volleyball tournament. The winner will receive Rs 200,000, the runner-up Rs 125,000, the third-place team Rs 75,000, and the consolation and fourth-place teams Rs 25,000.
Six teams are participating in the open women's volleyball tournament. On Tuesday, Arughat Youth Club defeated Manaslu Volleyball Training Center Kathmandu in straight sets of 3-0. The winner in the women's division will receive Rs 150,000, the second place Rs 100,000, the third place Rs 50,000, and the fourth place Rs 25,000, said coordinator Shrestha.
Shrestha said that a cultural and courtyard food festival was also organized along with the volleyball tournament to revive the sluggish market in the Arughat area, which is flooded due to the Budhi Gandaki project. "After the compensation distribution in the area that will be submerged by the Budhi Gandaki Project, some locals have gone to Kathmandu and Chitwan. The markets in the northern region have slowed down after the flood," he said. "We have tried to create a means for those outside the district to return to their villages through sports and cultural programs." The Angan Khana Festival includes various Newari dishes. Traditional dances including Ghatu and Sorathi are also being presented in the cultural festival.
