Nepalese boxer Chandra Bahadur Thapa has won a bronze medal at the ongoing IBA Men's World Boxing Championship in Dubai.

Chandra Bahadur could not advance beyond the bronze medal after losing 5:0 to Kazakhstan's boxer Viboshinov Saken in the 54 kg weight category on Thursday.

He had secured the bronze medal by reaching the semifinals the previous day. Chandra has made history as the first Nepali boxer to win a bronze medal at the IBA World Boxing Championship. He received 75,000 US dollars (more than 10 million Nepalese rupees) as a prize for the bronze medal. According to the rules of the organizing International Boxing Association (IBA), the winning athlete will receive 50 percent, the national association will receive 25 percent, and the coach will receive 25 percent.

Viboshinov, ranked seventh in the world, took advantage of his long reach and powerful blows to take a 5:0 lead over Chandra in the first round. Chandra also tried many times to score, but failed against the strong guard and experienced Viboshinov. He was forced to settle for bronze after being limited to a 5:0 margin in the second and third rounds as well. 

The journey of 5 Nepali boxers in the IBA Men's World Boxing has come to an end. Lal Prasad Upreti reached the quarterfinals in the 48 kg category. He received a prize of 10,000 US dollars. Other boxers, Phunglang Kambad, Khagendra Rokamagar and Deepak Shrestha, were stopped in the first match. Their coach was IBA three-star coach Deepak Maharjan.
