Jhapa's New Star Club has entered the semi-finals of the Sirijanga Gold Cup. New Star secured a place in the last four by defeating Panchthar Football Club 4-3 in a tiebreaker in the second quarterfinal of the ongoing tournament at the Tellok Secondary School ground in the center of Sirijanga Rural Municipality. The match was pushed to a tiebreaker after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
New Star took the early lead in the 16th minute of the first half. Foreign player Richard Wilson opened the scoring.
In the 64th minute of the second half, Panchthar's Niroj Lingden scored a goal and tied the team. In the tiebreaker, Panchthar's goalkeeper Mirak Khajum and Prakash Dhamala's shots went wide. Sushan Limbu, Niroj Lingden and Manish Chhetri scored the only goals.
For Jhapa, Vikram Tamang, Niraj Pariyar, Rajesh Sah and Richard's shots were converted into goals, but Panchthar goalkeeper Mirak stopped foreign player Ajay Martin's shot. Richard Wilson of Jhapa was named the Player of the Match.
Thursday's match will be between Marik FC Dharan and Parijat Football Club of India Siliguri from 2 pm, the organizers said.
8 teams are participating in the competition. The winner will receive Rs 300,000 and the runner-up will receive a trophy along with Rs 150,000. The best player will receive Rs 10,000, the highest scorer, best goalkeeper, best defender and best midfielder will receive Rs 5,000, according to the organizing club's president Arjun Bhattarai. The final will be held on Mangsir 29.
