Santoshi Shrestha, who has become known as the 'Golden Girl' runner, has set a national record by covering the distance in the Valencia Marathon.

The 42K Valencia Marathon, one of the world's major marathons, was held on Sunday. Santoshi completed the marathon in 2 hours 40 minutes 23 seconds. She improved her own national record of 2 hours 42 minutes 50 seconds set in the London Marathon last April.

Santoshi, who completed the Paris Olympic marathon, began her marathon journey by setting a record of 2 hours 46 minutes 26 seconds in the Bangabandhu Marathon in Bangladesh.

Santoshi finished in 58th place out of 82 elite female runners from around the world competing in Valencia. Only four runners completed the distance behind her, while others had abandoned the race midway.

Santoshi, who set a national record in the Delhi Half Marathon last October, won two bronze medals, including a national record, in the 5000m and 10000m races at the South Asian Senior Athletics Championship in Kartik.

Santoshi participated in the Valencia Marathon at the initiative of Nepal UK Run. Santoshi, who is on a fellowship from Global Sports Communication Netherlands, was training for the Valencia Marathon from the same coach.

She is an athlete undergoing national training for Mission 2026. She has been dominating Nepali athletics since winning gold in the 10,000m race at the 13th South Asian Games in 2019.
