Phungling Municipality has reached the finals of the Kanchenjunga Seselung Women's Gold Cup Football Tournament.
Phungling entered the final by defeating Maiwakhola Rural Municipality 2-0 in the first semi-final held on Wednesday at Bhanujan Secondary School in Phungling, the headquarters of Taplejung. Samiksha Magar scored two goals for Phungling. She scored the first goal in the 52nd minute of the second half and the second in extra time. She scored both goals single-handedly from the penalty area.
Samiksha was also named Wednesday's Man of the Match. She was presented with a cash prize of Rs 5,000 by Phungling Municipality Deputy Mayor Bhima Devi Ojha.
Phungling fielded four players from outside the district, while Maiwakhola fielded only players from its municipality.
Phungling will now have to play Thursday's winner to win the title. The competition will be between Meringden and Pathibhara Yangwarak Rural Municipality on Thursday. Meringden defeated Sidingwa Rural Municipality 2-0 and Pathibhara defeated Yangwarak Aathrai Triveni Rural Municipality 3-1 in the Tribaker to reach the semi-finals.
The final of the competition organized on the occasion of Chasok Tangnam (Nwagi Puja), a festival of the Limbu community, will be held on the 20th. The winner will receive 202,000 rupees along with a trophy, and the runner-up will receive 102,000 rupees.
Kanchenjunga Phungling Club and Ngawarak Sangjambo Phungling have organized the municipal-level competition. Eight out of the nine municipalities are participating in the competition.
