Sports infrastructure being added to Karnali for the 10th National Games

Sports such as badminton, karate, and taekwondo are being conducted daily at the covered hall located in Barahatakura, Musikot Municipality-1, Rukum West. Nearly 20 district-level competitions have also been held in the past year.

‘With easy access to transport, good accommodation and modern facilities, at least 2/3 of the national games can be held in this covered hall,’ said Anil Budha, president of the District Badminton Association. ‘Practice games are being held almost daily, and players are also enthusiastic about the national game.’

The National Sports Council has invested Rs 7.4 million in the covered hall, Rs 2 million from the Parliament Area Development Fund, Rs 1 million from Musikot Municipality and around Rs 1.5 million from other organizations. According to him, the covered hall has two courts with facilities including solar lights, electricity, mats, coolers and more.

Indoor practice games and training are also being held daily in the covered halls of Jumla, Kalikot, Dailekh and Salyan. The provincial government has spent around Rs 100 million on these covered halls in the past two years, while the local level has also partnered. ‘Even in the absence of infrastructure, players have not stopped playing practice games,’ said Resham Gharti, a volleyball player from Salyan. ‘Karnali will make good use of the home ground in the 10th National.’

Jawaharlal Hamal, head of the Youth and Sports Division of the Ministry of Social Development, said that the infrastructure for the national competition is in the preparation stage. According to him, the provincial government has allocated nearly Rs 280 million for infrastructure construction and sports activities in the current fiscal year. He said that out of the 36 games of the national competition, 24 can be played in Karnali. He said that the provincial government is preparing to play 13 of them in Surkhet and 11 games in other districts.

‘12 sports including shooting and cycling can also be played in stadiums in Lumbini and the Far West,’ he said, ‘Coved halls are in the preparation stage in all districts, they can be upgraded to meet international standards, which can be completed in 1/2 months.’

Manish Khadka, secretary of the Cricket Association Rukum West, said that players have not been able to showcase their potential as the national competition is not on time. ‘The federal government has been neglecting to postpone the national games repeatedly, now the national games should be held unconditionally in Falgun,’ he said, ‘The players are enthusiastic when volleyball, cricket and football competitions are held in the fairs here too. It seems that Karnali will achieve good results this time due to the enthusiasm and regular practice of the players.’

He complained that the cricket and football players were deprived of practice sports when the Chaurjahari, Dhaireni Chaur and Pandhunga stadiums were abandoned due to lack of budget. According to him, good players are being produced in remote areas despite the lack of infrastructure. Arjun Gharti from Rukum West is included in the national cricket team, while Arbin Gharti has already settled in the closed camp of the Under-19. Arjun is also an emerging player from Karnali Province.

The main venue of the 10th National Games, Karnali Province Stadium, is also in the process of preparing for the tournament, said Dholak Raj Dhakal, Secretary of the Ministry of Social Development. According to him, the stadium, which is about 99 percent complete, will accommodate 10,000 spectators and can play 16 games, including football, built according to 'FIFA standards'.

He informed that the stadium has been built to accommodate 4,000 spectators in the VVIP and VIP parapets. 'Now, only general maintenance and cleaning work remains, so the stadium will be handed over within a month,' he said, 'Preparations for the infrastructure for the 10th National Games have now been completed by the host province.'

According to the ministry, an 8-lane 400-meter track has been built for athletics in the provincial stadium. A swimming pool has been built for swimming, while outdoor and indoor courts have been built for basketball, volleyball and other sports. The covered hall in the stadium premises also has a capacity to accommodate about 1,000 spectators. According to him, boxing, taekwondo, wushu, karate, badminton and other sports can also be conducted in the covered hall.

The construction of the stadium, spread over an area of 9 bigahs, began in November 2078. So far, about 1.5 billion rupees have been spent on the stadium, and the MCGSL JV has signed an agreement for 1.59 billion rupees. Now, about 90 million rupees are yet to be paid to the contractor company. For which 95 million rupees have been allocated.

The construction of the Chisapani football field, Kalungchowk rugby field and the cricket field in the provincial stadium complex have also been completed in Surkhet. The provincial government has invested nearly Rs 40 million for these infrastructures. The ministry has stated that the work on the hockey field in Humla has reached the final stage at a cost of about Rs 710 million.

Minister for Social Development Ghanashyam Bhandari said that the host province is still in the process of preparing for the national games, including infrastructure, accommodation, health, security and local transportation. According to him, hotels in Birendranagar can accommodate around 3,500 players daily, while the provincial government has already invested nearly Rs 250 million in infrastructure, including roads, around the stadium and playground, targeting the national games.
