Janakpur Bolts on Monday introduced world cricket big name Shivnarayan Chandrapal as their coach for the Nepal Premier League (NPL). Janakpur had already announced Chandrapal as the coach for the NPL, which starts next week.
Janakpur had announced Chandrapal as its head coach on the same day that Pubudu Dassanayake, who led Janakpur to the title last year, became the coach of Biratnagar Kings. West Indies batting great Chandrapal arrived in Kathmandu on Monday.
‘This is my first time in Nepal, I don’t know much about the local cricket here. I am relying on the local coaches and taking all the information from them,’ Chandrapal told the media, ‘I have watched the ODIs and T20s played by Nepal. I had recently watched the T20 International match played by Nepal against the West Indies in Sharjah, beating the West Indies is a big success for Nepal.’
Chandrapal was the coach of the US women’s national team in 2022. Janakpur Bolts General Manager Niroj Khatiwada said that it was easy to sign a contract with Chandrapal as his team’s promoters are based in the US. He said that they approached Chandrapal after Dassanayake was appointed as the coach of the US.
51-year-old Chandrapal was the coach of the CPL franchise team Jamaica Tallawahs in 2022. He has played 164 Tests and 268 ODIs for the West Indies. In his 21-year international career, Chandrapal has scored more than 20,000 runs. He later became the captain of the West Indies.
He has experience playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Vitality Blast, Bangladesh Premier League, Champions League T20 and Indian Premier League. He also spent a long time in county cricket as a player.
Chandrapal said that he was excited about the NPL. “Whatever country’s league in the world, it benefits cricket in that country. It is also very good for the players,” said Chandrapal. “Players get to play with players from other countries and improve their performance. It is competitions like this that inspire them. When you have a league like this, the world is watching your country's cricket.'
