A last-minute goal from Matthijs de Ligt earned Manchester United a 2-2 draw with Tottenham in the English Premier League on Saturday. It was a game where the winner would have moved up to second place. But neither team could capitalize on that advantage.

Tottenham were on the verge of a dramatic victory when Matthijs de Ligt scored in the 84th minute and Richarlison in the 91st minute. But United equalised with a header from a corner in the 96th minute to extend their unbeaten run to five games.

“Fortunately we got a point, but I think we deserved it more than we did,” said De Ligt. “I’m proud of the fighting spirit the team showed. Because it’s not easy to get a point in this stadium.”

Tottenham and United are level on 18 points from 11 games, but Spurs are third on goal difference while United are seventh. United have not beaten Tottenham in their last eight games. Tottenham ended their long European competition drought by beating United 1-0 in the Europa League final in May.

Brian Mbeumo, who arrived from Brentford for £65m, headed in Amad Diego's cross to give United the lead in the 32nd minute. He has scored four goals in his last four games. But Tottenham took advantage of the situation as they tried to hold on to a one-goal lead until the end.

United goalkeeper Senne Lemmens saved shots from Christian Romero and Mickey Vaad de Ven after the break to bring his team closer to another victory. It was Tottenham's third consecutive home defeat. But Tell's goal turned the game into a dramatic affair. With five substitutes already on the bench, United were reduced to 10 men after striker Benjamin Cesc Fabregas was injured.
