Anjana's heroism in the tiebreaker

What you should know

Nepali goalkeeper Anjana Ranagamar proved herself once again. Should it be a penalty shootout and she should be in charge of the post, Nepal would win. However, this match was not officially recognized.

However, there was all the excitement and sensation that a match should have. That is why Nepal defeated India 3-0 in a tiebreaker in a friendly match played in Sikkim on Wednesday.

After the scheduled 90-minute match at the Paljor Stadium in Sikkim ended in a 1-1 draw, a penalty shootout was resorted to to select the winning team. In that, all three of India's shots could not be converted into goals. Two of them were saved by Anjana, while the other one went out. Anjana easily stopped the shots of Priyadarshini and Estam Oram.

Even among them, Estam's shot was so weak that Anjana blocked it with her foot. Santosh's shot did not even hit the post. On the other hand, Savita Ranagamar, Rashmikumari Ghising and Nisha Thokar's shots were converted into goals for Nepal.

Indian goalkeeper Somiya had no chance to save in all three shots. Anita Basnet, who was playing the role of captain, did not convert into a goal.

That shot went off the outside of the post. If her shot had been a goal, Nisha's fourth shot would not have been necessary. Anjana was brought on as a substitute player after the match ended in a draw in regular time. She proved that decision right once again. This performance is reminiscent of the match in which Nepal defeated India in the semi-final of the SAFF Championship held in Kathmandu last year.

After the regular and extra time matches of that match ended in a draw, a tiebreaker was needed, and Anjana proved to be the hero in that too. She had also led Nepal to a series win in the tiebreaker after two friendly matches against Bangladesh ended in a draw in 2023. Thus, Anjana has led Nepal to three consecutive tiebreaker wins.

Earlier, India took the lead in the 30th minute of the first half through a goal by Soumya Guguloth. Nepal managed to equalize in the injury time of the first half. Rashmikumari headed the ball into the post after Anita's corner kick.

Coach Navin Neupane had fielded a completely new Nepal team for this match and in the process, he gave a chance to new and less experienced players. The team was fielded with 10 changes from the starting line-up of the last match against India, they did not disappoint Nepal and won the tiebreaker from a position behind by one goal.

With this, Nepal's tour of India has come to an end. Nepal, who lost 3-0 to Iran in their first match in the Three Nations Cup, defeated India 2-1 in the second match.
