Nepal has won a historic bronze medal in the mixed relay race of the South Asian Senior Athletics Championships. This is the first international medal won by Nepal in the 4x400m mixed relay at the ongoing competition in Ranchi, India.
Nepal was given this success by Som Bahadur Kumal, Ram Prasad Tharu, Jayarani Tharu and Ramita Kumari Tharu. They clocked 3 minutes 37.16 seconds.
Nepal won the bronze medal in this event, while India (3 minutes 20.13 seconds) and Sri Lanka (3 minutes 20.85 seconds) won the gold and silver medals respectively.
This is the third medal won by Nepal on the first day of the championship. Earlier, Olympian Santoshi Shrestha won the bronze medal in the 5000 meters race with a national record. She set a new record of 16 minutes 36.61 seconds. The previous record for the event was 16 minutes 49.98 seconds in the name of Kanchhi Maya Koju. Kanchhi Maya had set this record at the Beijing Asian Games.
While Santoshi won the bronze, Indian athlete Sanjana won the gold and Seema won the silver. Nepal's Mukesh Pal also won bronze in the men's 500-meter race. Mukesh completed the race in 14 minutes 25.54 seconds. Another Nepali runner, Ganesh Rawat, finished fifth in 14 minutes 47.65 seconds. India's Prince Kumar won the gold medal in the men's 500-meter race, while Sri Lanka's Biknaraj Bixon won silver.
