The 10th National Sports Tournament, which was supposed to be held in Karnali Province, has been thrown into confusion. Earlier, the competition was scheduled for 3rd to 10th of May, after changing the date three times. But the National Sports Council (Rakhep) board meeting chaired by the then Youth and Sports Minister Tejulal Chaudhary on March 29 last year decided not to hold the competition on that date.
The new date of the competition has not been fixed yet. Because of this, nearly a dozen stadiums including the state stadium in Karnali are stranded. Social Development Minister Ghanshyam Bhandari said that the players were disappointed when the game was stopped after the preparations of the host province for conducting the
competition had reached their final stages.
"Even though the competition has already been fixed, we are still in the preparation stage, the interest of the then federal government made the competition uncertain," he said, "because of the interim government, the confusion has increased after the formation of the new government." Minister Bhandari said that after the fall of the then government, there was a further problem when the title distribution and LMBIS were still pending from the budget allocated by the Ministry of Finance for the
competition. 11 sub-committees were also formed by the then federal government for the preparation of the
competition. All committees are currently inactive . For the competition last year in February The secretariat of the original organizing committee for the 10th National Games was inaugurated at the state stadium complex in Birendranagar. But since there is no activity that should be done by the secretariat, the secretariat is deserted . Sudhir Shah, the volleyball coach, said that both the federal and state governments have conflicted interests in the
competition. "Competition has turned into the political interests of both levels of government, one side is blaming the other," he said.
Even though the infrastructure is ready in Karnali, there is confusion in the conduct of the competition due to the delay in preparation and various tenders by the federal government.
"Even though 99 percent of the infrastructure was ready, the match could not be started, after my term ended, the member-secretary was not appointed," he said, "due to the political interests of the parties involved in the government at that time, the deadline of the competition was moved many times." But in Karnali, the council is now without a leader because the UML and the Congress, the power partner parties, did not agree on the issue of share.
Ministry of Social Development has appointed Padma Bahadur Khadka, treasurer of Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) and Ganesh Kumar Karki, former secretary of Karnali Pradesh Football Association, as expert members for the appointment of Member-Secretary of Provincial Sports Development Council. But a member said that the committee formed under the leadership of the secretary of the ministry has become inactive due to the lack of agreement.
The council is now under the authority of ex-officio officials, while Ram Prasad Upadhyay, senior education officer of the Ministry of Social Development, has been given the responsibility of daily operations.
The construction of the Karnali State Stadium, the main venue of the tenth national tournament, has been completed almost a year ago with an investment of 1.59 billion rupees, while the construction of the Chisapani Football Ground, Kalungchok Rugby Ground and the cricket ground of the State Rangshakha Complex has also been completed in Surkhet.
The Karnali government had prepared to play 24 out of 35 games in Karnali. Out of that, the provincial government plans to play 16 games including football in the provincial stadium that can hold nearly 10,000 spectators. According to him, Social Development Minister Bhandari said that the provincial government has prepared to play some games in the Humla hockey ground and covered halls in Dailekh, Kalikot, Jumla, Rukum West and Salyan.
'The management of accommodation, health, security and local transport for the national sports is still in the preparation stage,' he said, 'We are also in the preparation stage for the management of the daily accommodation of around 3,500 players in the hotels of the state capital Birendranagar.' The federal government allocated 600 million rupees in the budget of the last financial year for the competition.
