Nepal's ultra runner Sunmaya Budha has won a historic silver medal in the third edition of the World Mountain and Trail Run Championship.
In the competition held in Canfranc, Spain, Sunmaya won the second place in the 82 km trail run. She completed the prescribed distance in 10 hours 23 minutes 03 seconds. Overtaking Sunmaya in this event, American runner Katie Schiede completed the distance in 9 hours and 57 minutes . Italy's Favio Conti managed to win bronze in 10 hours and 35 minutes.
World Athletics and the International Association of Ultra Runners collaborated for the first time in the competition organized by the World Mountain Running Association. 1,700 players from 80 countries participated in the competition. It was the largest turnout ever.
Nepal Adventure Running Federation made Suman Kulung, Sange Sherpa and Mankumar Roka participate in the competition along with Sunmaya from Nepal.
Suman finished the 32nd place and Manakumar finished the 36th place in the 82 km long trail . Sunmaya's achievement in the difficult race at the height of 5,413 meters at Canfranc-Pirinos has pointed out the high potential of Nepal's ultra running in the world . Ekendra Kunwar, president of the
federation, said that the success achieved by Nepal is not only personal, but it has revealed the world-class presence and potential of Nepali trail running.
The participation of Nepalese players was facilitated by the federation. The players prepared and participated with the help of individual sponsors . Dr. Suman of Austria. Support was received from the Sigrid Schwarzenbacher Foundation while Sunmaya and Manakumar Magar were supported by the Kailash Phuga Asia Pacific Adventure Athletes Team and coach Andy DuBois. Sange also made Kailash a sponsor.
The 2024 season played a special role for Sunmaya to achieve this historic achievement. Spain's Transvalcania was second in the 80km, paving the way for her to establish herself as the world's best trail runner.
Saying that it is an incomparable challenge for Nepalis to have access to international travel, team coordinator Preeti Khatri said, "I am personally very proud of the results of Sunmaya". I consider myself lucky to be a part of this amazing success . I am happy to have been able to coordinate the Nepali team, which has enhanced Nepal's reputation with this world-class performance.
