Germany suffered a surprising and shocking 2-0 defeat at the hands of Slovakia on Friday in their first match of the European World Cup Qualifying Group 'A'.

This is only the rare fourth occasion in the history of World Cup qualifiers that Germany have lost. David Stalch added the second goal for Slovakia, who took the lead with David Hanko's goal.

In another match of this group, Northern Ireland defeated Luxembourg 3-1. Similarly, in Group E, Spain beat Bulgaria 3-0, while Turkey defeated Georgia 3-2.

Netherlands and Poland played 1-1 in group 'G'. In this group, Lithuania and Malta also played 1-1.
