Despite spending heavily on new forwards, Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal in their first English Premier League match on Sunday. It also presented Arsenal's title challenge.

Ricardo Calafiori scored the only goal of the game at Old Trafford. United's goalkeeper Elte Bayindir took advantage of a mistake made by the Italian defender and scored a goal. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, runners-up in the last three seasons, is under huge pressure to secure a first league title since 2003-04.

United signed Mathews Cunha, Brian Mbeumo and Benjamin Cesko for £200 million to strengthen their forward line. Cunha and Mbeumo showed good influence but could not score. Cesco only entered the field in the second half. United managed just 44 goals in 38 Premier League games last season and finished in 15th place. It was United's worst performance in 51 years.

Club World Cup winners Chelsea were also held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace in their first game of the new season. It was a disappointing start for Chelsea, picking up just one point at Stamford Bridge.

In another match on Sunday, Nottingham Forest defeated Brentford 3-1 with the help of three possible goals in the first half. Chris Wood scored twice for Forest. After he opened the scoring in the fifth minute, Dan Ndoye added the second goal in the 42nd minute. Ood scored the third goal in the second minute of injury time of the first half. The only possible goal for Brentford went to Igor Thiego. He scored from the penalty spot in the 78th minute but it was no more than a consolation goal and Forest got off to a good start in the league.

It is also the first time Forest have won their first league game of the season since 2018-2017. On the other hand, Brentford's new coach, Keith Andrews, suffered a defeat in his first charge. Earlier, Manchester City took a winning start on Saturday while presenting their claim to the title.

They beat Wolves 4-0 thanks to two goals from Erling Haaland. Tijani Reginders and Ryan Serki scored 1-1 for City.

Barcelona's winning start

Madrid: Barcelona, the defending champion in the Spanish La Liga, got off to a strong start on Saturday and won 3-0 against Real Marloca. Marloca, who is limited to 9 players, was defeated by Barcelona at his home. Rafinha opened the scoring for the Catalan club in the seventh minute.

Ferran Torres added the second goal in the 23rd minute. Lamin Yamal scored the third goal in the fourth minute of second half injury time. Marcus Rashford has officially made his debut for Barcelona.
