While celebrating World Badminton Day in a different way, Kathmandu Badminton Academy (KBA) has started 'Galli Badminton' in Bhaktapur on Saturday.
The event was organized with the support of Bhaktapur District Badminton Association and Bhaktapur Municipality with the message 'Badminton for all and from street to glory'.
President of Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) Jeevanram Shrestha expressed the hope that the community can be united through sports through such programs.
More than 200 participants in the age group of 5 to 91 years participated in the festival. This program transformed the ancient streets of Bhaktapur into a lively and cultural place through sports.
Former national badminton champions and various sports personalities were also present to promote this community-based sport and show solidarity . The special presence of Nepal's number one female player Rashila Maharjan added excitement to the children.
President of Nepal Badminton Association Ramji Bahadur Shrestha said that the beginning of street badminton can remain as an exemplary model of grassroots game development.
Volleyball international referee and head of tourism of Bhaktapur municipality Gautam Lasiva said that this program will help to promote Bhaktapur's vibrant heritage as a tourist destination and make common people aware of badminton.
KBA Secretary Deepak Thapa highlighted the goals of the Galli Badminton Campaign. He said that its purpose is to integrate badminton in daily life through local streets, courtyards and neighborhoods. Secretary Thapa indicated that the alley may also become a special area for guests and dignitaries to play badminton.
President of Kathmandu Badminton Academy, Rita Bista expressed her gratitude to all the partners, participants and local community and clarified that alley badminton was started to give energy to Nepali badminton. A school-level competition was held among the students of Bhaktapur in the
program. A coaching clinic was conducted for the youth by professional coaches and live painting was also done to present badminton through art . It is said that Goldengate College, Jagran Dental Home, Thrive Brokerage Home, Amudi Food and others are supporting the
program.
Secretary Thapa said that the inspirational festival has successfully combined sports with heritage, inclusion and tourism and brought to life the campaign to take badminton 'from street to glory'.
