Namobuddha Football Club Saptari won the 17th edition of Sahid Bhimnarayan Gold Cup. Saptari won the title by defeating Gaighat Football Club Udaipur by 5-3 goal difference in the final match on Saturday afternoon.
For the first time in the 17 years of the Bhimnarayan Gold Cup, both teams met in the finals. In the very competitive match that took place in the afternoon in Lower Tundikhel, the match was decided on the basis of a tri-breaker after 2-2 in the stipulated period of 90 minutes.
In the last moment of the first half, both teams scored three goals in a span of five minutes. Against Gaighat, Saptari's Raj Bhusal scored in the 40th minute to give the team the lead. However, Gaighat only had to wait a minute to take revenge on Saptari. In the 41st minute, Akash Rai of Gaighat equalized by scoring a goal. Again, on behalf of Saptari, Kshitij Bhandari managed to maintain the lead with an excellent shot in the 44th minute. Gaighat had to wait until the last 83rd minute after the interval to equalize. After Ashish Rai's goal, the game ended in a tie, the result was decided by a tribreaker.
Vivek Rai, Hemant Bhujel, Sanam Dhimal and Ayush Magar managed to score for Saptari's victory. Only Nischal Moktan, Akash Rai and Pravin Rai managed to score from Gaighat. Dhiren Chhetri's goal was won by Ravin Basnet, the opponent Saptari's goalkeeper, with an excellent save and the team won the title.
Both the teams had decided to travel to the final by defeating the contenders who had won the title in the previous competition. Namobuddha Football Club entered the final after defeating the defending champion Birtamod United Club in the semi-finals. Similarly, Gaighat Football Club reached the final by shocking the departmental team APF Football Club. Namobuddha Saptari, the winner of the
competition, received a cash prize of 5 lakhs and Gaighat, the runner-up, received a trophy medal, cup and certificate along with 250,000 rupees. Raj Bhusal of the winning team was declared the player of the tournament and was awarded with cash of 17 thousand 555. Saptari's Ravin Basnet was awarded the player of the match and the best goalkeeper of the final. Ayush Magar of the winning team was declared the best defender. West midfielder Vivek Rai from Saptari, West forward Gaighat foreign player Fofona and Rising Player organizer Deepen Shakya from Dhankuta team were announced. Suresh Lama of the winning team has been announced as the West Coach. All received cash prizes.
Manohar Narayan Shrestha, son of Dhankuta municipality head Chintan Tamang and Shaheed Bhimnarayan, presented trophies and prizes to the winning team. Likewise, Pakhribas Municipality Chief Gyan Bahadur Gurung, Dhankuta Municipality Deputy Chief Himadevi Khanal and others distributed the runner-up Gaighat.
