Eight teams are participating including 'A' division
The 17th edition of Shaheed Bhimnarayan Gold Cup is starting from Sunday.
According to the organizers, the game will start at 3 pm at Lower Tundikhel located in Dhankuta 5. The match on the first day of the tournament will be played between organizer Shahid Bhimnarayan Foundation Dhankuta and Namobuddha Youth Football Club Saptari. Eight teams including 'A' division will participate in the
competition. In which the organizers and Namobuddha Youth Football Club are Chitlang Football Club Kathmandu, Birtamod United Jhapa, Boys Football Club Itahari, Gaighat Football Club Udaipur, Belbari Football Club Morang and the departmental team APF Club Kathmandu.
The winner will receive a cash prize of 5 lakhs and the runner-up will receive a trophy medal, cup and certificate along with 250,000 rupees. Similarly, the highest scorer, man of the match and best player will also get cash prizes. Shambhu Pradhan, the coordinator of the competition, informed that ten different sub-committees have also been formed. Coordinator Pradhan said that financial, publicity, playground management, stage, security, volunteer and first aid management sub-committee has been formed. It is said that the main supporter of the
competition is all the municipalities in the district including Dhankuta Municipality, the sponsor is Jagdamba Enterprises Pvt. Arrangements have been made to watch the matches of the competition free of charge.
Birtamod United Jhapa Football Club won the Shahid Bhimnarayan Gold Cup title of the 16th edition last year . Purendralal Shrestha, president of Shaheed Bhimnarayan Shrestha Memorial Foundation, said that the competition, which started in 2055, has been running regularly since 2063 after a few years of postponement. The competition is being conducted in memory of martyr Bhimnarayan Shrestha, who was sentenced to death in 2035 for throwing a bomb at the then King Birendra Shah. Shrestha has been declared a martyr by the government in 2074.
