Under the captaincy of Shreyas Air, Punjab Kings defeated Gujarat Titans by 11 runs in Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket on Tuesday. Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title last season, scored an unbeaten 97 on his debut for Punjab.
This is Air's highest score in IPL. After losing the toss and being invited to bat, Punjab were impressed by his innings and posted a score of 243-5. Ayr had an opportunity to complete the century in the last over. However, after Shashank Singh played the last over and added 23 runs with 5 fours, Ayr came close to his first century in the IPL. Iyer and Shashank shared 81 runs in the sixth wicket playing 28 balls.
Air played a total of 42 balls and hit 9 sixes and 5 fours. Shashank remained unbeaten on 44 runs off 16 balls, hitting 6 fours and 2 sixes. Opener Priyansh Arya scored 47 runs off 23 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes. Azmatullah Omarzai scored 16 off 15 balls while Glenn Maxwell was dismissed lbw on the first ball he faced. Gujarat's Sai Kishore took 3 wickets for 30 runs in 4 overs.
In response, Gujarat lost 5 wickets and scored only 232 runs. Opener Sai Sudarshan scored 74 runs from 41 balls with 5 fours and 6 sixes. He got Gujarat off to a good start by scoring 61 runs in 6 overs for the first wicket with captain Shubman Gill. Gill scored 33 runs off 14 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes. Jos Buttler scored 54 runs in 33 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes and Serfan Rutherford scored 46 runs in 28 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes but it was not enough to win Gujarat.
Arshdeep Singh took 2 wickets and Marco Johnson and Maxwell took 1 wicket each from Punjab. In bowling, Vijay Kumar became the main hero of Punjab. He spent only 28 runs in 3 overs when Gujarat was advancing towards victory.
