Morang's Letang Football Club has entered the semi-finals of the fifth edition of the Mills Gold Cup football tournament. In the quarter-final match held on Wednesday at Biratnagar's Jute Mill Stadium, Letang defeated the host Laligunras Sporting Club Rani Mills Area by 4-2 goals in a tiebreaker and secured a place in the semi-finals.
The game was decided on a tiebreaker after the goal was tied at 1-1 at the scheduled time. Letang's Pujan Chaudhary, Tejan Gurung, Sougat Rai and Sujan Tilwa scored in the tiebreaker. Letang's goalkeeper Purna Chemjong gave the team a victory by making an excellent save against the shots made by Vivek Rai and Kailash Basnet of the host. Purna Chemjong, who saved two goals in the tiebreaker, was declared the best player.
Only Ashish Lavati and Ramesh Chaudhary scored in the tie breaker for Letang. With this victory, Letang will compete against the home team Pema Yuva Sporting Club in the second semi-final on Friday for the final.
Earlier on Tuesday, Sunsari Itahari's TFC Talatalaiya advanced to the semi-finals after defeating YSC Khokhajheel Katihar of India 4-0. Similarly, Fusion Football Club Udaipur defeated the Progressive Youth Club of Saptari by 1-0 and made it to the semi-finals. Pema Sporting Club defeated Koshi Pradesh Police Office Biratnagar by 2-0 goals and made it to the last four.
The quarterfinal match was very competitive. The host team took the lead in the 4th minute of the game. Bhuvan Basnet scored a clever goal to give the team a 1-0 lead. The host's lead could not be maintained for long and after 13 minutes, Letang scored to equalize the match. In the 16th minute of the game, Sagar Tiwari scored a pass from Letang's Anoop Magar to tie the game at 1-1. Both teams then missed several scoring opportunities, after which the game went to a tiebreaker and Letang won.
In the first semi-final match on Thursday, the organizer says that there will be a clash between Gaighat's Fusion Football Club and Itahari's TFC Talatalaiya.
