Nepali chess player Purushottam Silwal has become a FIDE Candidate Master through the international intelligence competition held in Sri Lanka. 17-year-old Purushottam, who reached Sri Lanka at his own expense, won the CM title by scoring 4.5 points in 9 rounds of high-level international competition.
He finished the middle level game in the Asian Zonal 3.2 Chess Tournament held under the auspices of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and organized by the Sri Lankan Chess Federation.
The Asian Zonal 3.2 Zonal in which the players from Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives and Bhutan along with the host Sri Lanka competed was held in Colombo. The Nepal Intellectual Federation made FM Rupesh Jaiswal and Sindira Joshi participate in the same competition as the 25th Nepal Champion and 10th Female Nepal Champion. FIDE master Rupesh scored 5 points while female champion Sindira scored only 3.5 points.
Bangladesh's 2431 rated International Master (IM) Manun Reza Nir won the title by scoring 7 points. On the women's side, Ahmed Wadifa, rated 2097 from Bangladesh, secured the first position by scoring 7 points. She also managed to get the IM title. Male and female winners received 1,500 and 1,000 dollars respectively. In another category blitz chess, Nepal's 2159 rated FM Rupesh Jaiswal got 4th place with 5.5 points and 2135 rated youth Purushottam Silwal got 6th place with 5 points.
