Secretary of Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) Paras Khadka has said that a well-equipped field is necessary to ensure the future of cricket. On the last day of the 12th Nepal Literature Festival in Pokhara, on the last day of the 'Free Hit: Beyond NPL' session, he spoke with journalist Savina Karki and pointed out the need for a well-equipped field to ensure the future of the Nepal Premier League (NPL).
He asserted that if a cricket ground with facilities is built, there is no need to depend on the government for cricket. "If a complete cricket ground is built, we can collect revenue from the audience through 500, 1,500, 2,000 tickets," he said. He said that the ministry has received a commitment to play the second edition of NPL under flood lights. He, who is also the former captain of the Nepali national men's team, claimed that the best 10-12 players of the national team have reached the position of earning 40/50 million a year.
Financially, he said that the level of players and associations in cricket is good now. "When I started cricket, I was getting an allowance of Rs 25 in the cricket association." Starting from 25 rupees, our generation used to get 25 dollars in international competitions,' he said, 'In that situation of earning 750 dollars a year, we had to buy a bat as well . Had to buy clothes too . The family also had to give a little. Friends also had to be fed . With that structure, cricket has reached the state it has reached now, financially, the players, the cricket association has reached a very good level.
He said that Nepal has the most fan following after the T-20 World Cup in India in 2024. He said that when Nepal played the World Cup in the US, there were 8,950 Nepali spectators while there were only 50 people from the Netherlands. He said that the union is currently paying monthly wages to 80-90 players from national to provincial levels. He said, "Cricket Association has reached a situation where 30 male and 19 female players, 80-90 players from the state have been given contracts to play." He said that the association has now worked on how to take players, coaches, field staff professionally. How to make the player's salary one lakh to two lakh? We have gone ahead to make an industry so that everyone from the district, state, from our players, coaches, ground staff can engage in it as a profession,' he said .
He expressed happiness that NPL has developed sports culture. "As soon as the NPL ended, Janakpur Bolts went to Madhesh province and went on a trophy tour in front of the Janaki temple without anyone calling. 5/7 lakh people went to support the team saying that this is my team, to touch the trophy once," he said, "When you hear and see that, culture and sports are also a priority from NPL." Everyone has a feeling that sports should be developed.'
