Pradeep Khadka of Pokhara became the champion in the men's singles competition on Friday under the third Mayor's Cup and Butwal Open Lawn Tennis Tournament held in Butwal, Rupandehi. Khadka, who has been participating since the beginning of the Butwal Open, became the champion for the third time in a row.

Khadka defeated Hrithik Rana of Butwal in the final at Lawn Tennis Village here on Friday afternoon. Khadka, who was defeated in the first set, won the title by showing an excellent comeback. Khadka also defeated Hrithik in the men's singles event held last year. Hrithik, who showed an improved game from the beginning compared to last year, failed to maintain the lead he had established in the second set and suffered a defeat. Khadka praised Hrithik after the match saying that there was an improvement in the performance.

'Hrithik and I are well-known rivals,' Khadka said to the media, 'This time Hrithik lost the game after I managed to make a great comeback.' After becoming the champion, Khadka received 60,000 cash, cup, medal and certificate along with the title. According to the organizer Rupandehi Lawn Tennis Association, Pranab Khanal was the winner in the first edition of the tournament. In the second edition, Khadka became the champion. Then Hrithik won the third and fourth edition. Khadka became the champion in the next three editions. After consecutive wins, Khadka called Butwal his 'second home' and said that the love of the supporters here helps in the performance.  In the

final, Hrithik won the first set with 6-3 points. Pradeep won the second set 7-6. In the deciding set, Pradeep came back and won with 6-1 points and became the champion. Khadka said that this is the 15th title of his playing life. "I won the first title of my life at the Butwal Open," he said, "I am happy to be the champion here for the 15th time."

Jitendra Pariyar won the men's singles title over 35 years in the finals here on Friday morning. Pariyar defeated Santosh Khatri 6-4, 6-1 in the final. Kamal Bahadur Bhandari won the title by defeating Dev Chhetri 6-1, 6-1 in singles over 45 years. Sunira Thapa of Kathmandu became the champion after defeating Abhilasha Bista in the final of the women's singles event held on Wednesday.

After the final match, Butwal sub-metropolitan chief Khelraj Pandey, Bagmati Tennis Association president Manoj Shamsher Rana, Kaski Lawn Tennis Association president Rajkumar Gurung, Mahasenani Machindra Thapa, association founder president Ashok Gurung, tournament supervisor Rajan Paudel and Rupandehi Lawn Tennis Association president Gopal Gyawali distributed prizes to the winners and runners-up. The winner of male/female singles will be awarded 60/60 thousand in cash, the runner-up will receive 30 thousand in cash and the third place winner will be awarded with cup, medal and certificate along with 20 thousand. Similarly, the winners of Men's 35 Plus, Men's 45 Plus, Men's 55 Plus, Men's 65 Plus were awarded with 40 thousand, 35 thousand, 25 thousand and 15 thousand rupees respectively, the runners-up were awarded with 20 thousand, 20 thousand, 15 thousand and 7 thousand five hundred rupees, cups, medals and certificates.
