Sikkim's Thunderbolt North United has entered the quarter-finals of the ongoing 24th Aha-Rara Gold Cup in Pokhara after defeating two-time champion Sankata Club 3-1. In the last pre-quarterfinal match at Pokhara Stadium on Friday, the Indian team, which is traveling to Nepal for the first time, returned Sankata home from the first match.
Franklin Quete Tala, Karan Rai and Adarsh Tamang scored for Sankat. Sankat's Manish Poudel scored the consolation goal. In the
game, Sankat took the early lead. Paudel took the lead in the 17th minute of the game. He made good use of Pasang Lama's pass and gave an excellent finish. In the 35th minute of the game, Thunderbolt got a penalty and the game was tied. Thunderbolt's Tala scored easily in the penalty and did not give Sankata goalkeeper Deep Karki any chance. Although the first half ended in a 1-1 draw, Thunderbolt added 2 goals in the second half and secured a quarterfinal meeting with another foreign team, the Black Bulls Football Club of Uzbekistan. Karan Rai scored a goal in the 77th minute of the
game and gave Thunderbolt the lead. He scored from Andre's pass from the box. Adarsh Tamang of Thunderbolt scored a great goal in the 89th minute. A shot from the center of the field was converted into a goal. When goalkeeper Deep Karki was advancing, Adarsh hit the empty post from the middle. Tala of Thunderbolt was declared the player of the match. Thunderbolt will play the quarterfinals against the Black Bulls on January 29.
Saturday, the first quarter-final match of the tournament will be between Nepal Police Club and Brigade Boys Club, UK. Police defeated the host Sahara and entered the quarterfinals, while Brigade Boys Club was directly selected for the quarterfinals.
