With ex-captain Paras Khadka now the CAN secretary, it is no coincidence that the two-day trophy will be held after his arrival at cricket's highest body.
The red ball and white dress is the new dimension of Nepali cricket,' said the then captain Paras Khadka before flying to Sri Lanka 10 years ago. Nepal was preparing to play a multi-day match in Sri Lanka in 2014, the year after playing the Twenty-20 World Cup in Bangladesh.
Paras made this statement when the Nepali team was about to fly to Colombo to play a three-day match against the local team in Sri Lanka on the initiative of the then coach Pubudu Dasanayake. After playing the World Cup, many eyes were on Nepali cricket. Nepal wanted to rise above the Twenty20 World Cup.
After the Twenty20 World Cup, Nepal's goal was the ODI World Cup. For that, it was necessary to have a good domestic cricket structure. However, there was hardly a one-day domestic tournament in Nepal. That too stopped for a few years after 2014.
multi-day cricket was not happening. In this case, Nepal played a three-day match in Sri Lanka. Nepal played well in Sri Lanka. Sharad Bheshavkar was close to a century. This increased the confidence of Nepalese players. However, it took years for Nepal to play multi-day cricket again. In the meantime, Nepal has not been able to play ODI World Cup cricket.
Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) has decided to revive two-day cricket this year. It is named Jai Trophy, starting on Sunday. Jai Trophy Cricket was brought in the name of former CAN President Jayakumar Nath Shah. Jai Trophy and two-day cricket are not new for Nepal. From 2037 to 2057, CAN organized a national tournament under the name of Jai Trophy. The initial edition of this tournament used to be a two-day event.
CAN brought two-day cricket back into operation in 2007. During the competition in Nepalgunj, Bhairahawa and Birgunj, the Madhesh movement was raging, due to which the competition was stopped. Couldn't do it again. Now CAN is going to organize Jai Trophy two-day cricket in Janakpur and Birganj.
Paras is now CAN's secretary himself. It is not just a coincidence that the two-day trophy is going to be held after he came to the highest body of Nepali cricket. Paras himself played his first match for the national team in three-day cricket. This match against Malaysia in 2004 was recognized as first class. However, Paras got to experience only two matches of three-day internationals.
Paras made his 'debut' in Sayam, where the Asian region of the intercontinental three-day cup is being selected. Paresh Lohani, Mahbub Alam have also scored centuries in three-day international cricket. However, due to its lack of a clear outline in international cricket and lagging behind in terms of performance, Nepal remained deprived of playing multi-day cricket.
Its impact reached the Nepali national team. Nepal could not perform in 50 over international competitions. Nepal toured Sri Lanka in 2014 hoping to strengthen their performance in ODIs.
In 2019, when England's Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) visited Nepal, the Nepali national team got a chance to experience three-day cricket again. The players including the then captain Gyanendra Malla made their first-class cricket debut by playing against MCC, while the current captain Rohit Paudel was in the team but was not included in the playing eleven. After that, Nepal is going to organize multi-day cricket for the first time.
This is the structure
Last year the Prime Minister's Cup One Day National Tournament was organized. The top four teams Nepal Police Club, Tribhuvan Army Club, Madhesh Pradesh and Bagmati Pradesh will now play in Jai Trophy two-day cricket. Nepal APF Club within the top four of Prime Minister's Cup Asif Shaikh, Sandeep Zora, along with Nepali national team captain Rohit Paudel will not be able to play Jai Trophy two-day cricket due to
. After competing in the round robin league, the final will be between the top two teams. The final will be three days. In that sense, this will be Nepal's first three-day match.
will be a 101 over match every day. Each day's game will be 7 hours long. The first session will be from 9 am to 11.30 am, followed by a lunch break until 12.10 pm. Then the afternoon session will begin. It will run until 2:25 p.m. Then there will be a tea break. The match of the third session will start at 2:45 PM. It will last till 4:45 p.m.
There is a possibility that the start of the morning session will be delayed and the matches of the final session will be stopped before the scheduled time due to the ongoing storm in Terai. A team will be allowed to play only 60 overs in the first innings. Even before that, a team can announce the end of the innings. International umpire Vinay Kumar Jha said that there is a provision to bat as much as needed in the second innings. The top team of the competition will be selected based on
points. Scores for scoring runs and taking wickets are kept as bonus points. In the first innings each team will get half a point for every 25 runs, one point bonus for every 50 runs.
will also be worth half a point per wicket and a bonus point equal to 2 wickets. In the second innings, a maximum of 4 points will be scored in the batting. That is, even if you score more than 200 runs, you will not get any bonus points. There is a provision to get all 5 bonus points for bowling in the second innings. The
final is a three-day event, so the rules are slightly different. The first innings will be limited to 80 overs. He will be allowed to bat as much as he wants in the second innings.
I will miss Jai Trophy a lot
- Rohit Paudel, Captain, National Cricket Team
Two-day cricket is very important for Nepal. Playing long structures teaches us how to be patient and play for a long time. It also helps to play well and easily in T20 and 50 over matches. When it comes to skill set, it is the long structure game that teaches how to take the batting forward. Learning how to play through the day with patience is in a similar structure. Playing long structures is also very important for
bowlers. Because you have to keep throwing the ball in the same area in the two-day event. Bowlers learn how to bowl length in this structure. Playing long structures helps a lot to soak in short structures. I believe that the Jai Trophy which is going on now will help Nepal to play well in T20 and ODIs in the coming days.
On a personal note, I will miss the Jai Trophy a lot. So far I have not played any multi-day cricket. My desire is to play multi-day cricket. Saying this, the importance of the Prime Minister's Cup is also the same. If all the players take the Prime Minister's Cup from their heart, they will be able to play Jai Trophy two-day cricket tomorrow.
because it had to be among the top four teams in the first Prime Minister's Cup to play. This increases the importance of the Prime Minister's Cup as it exposes the teams to higher competition. I would like to wish all the players who are going to play in the Jai Trophy, do well in this tournament.
