Golfer Neeraj Tamang of Dharan took a 7-stroke lead on the second day of the Surya Nepal Eastern Open on Thursday.
Neeraj carded a 4-under 66 on the home course to remain at the top with an impressive total of 12-under 128. He trailed Vishnu Sharma by 7 strokes in the last 18 holes. This has strengthened his chances of winning the second title of his career.
Vishnu finished with a 3-under 67 at Dharan Golf Club with a par 70. He finished second overall with a 5-under 135. Home pros Balabhadra Rai and Bhuvankumar Rocca finished joint third with scores of 4-under 136. Balabhadra finished with a 3-under 67 and Bhuvan with a 1-under 69. Dhan Bahadur Thapa finished fifth overall with a 1-under 139. He finished with 3 over 73.
Ravi Khadka and Rame Magar finished sixth with scores of even par 140. Both finished with 1-under 69s. Overall, Tank Bahadur Karki and number one pro Bhuvan Nagarkoti finished eighth with a score of 2 over 142. Tank shot a 2-under 68 and Bhuvan a 3-over 73. At 3 over 143, Dinesh Prajapati, Rajen Rai and Sunil KC finished joint tenth. Dinesh and Rajen scored even par 70 and Sunil scored 2 over 72.
Neeraj shot a 2-under 34 on the front nine to produce the perfect score card on Thursday. He bogeyed the first hole. Then he saved one shot each in the third, fifth and sixth holes. He then hit three birdies on the back nine. After saving one shot each on the 14th, 16th and 17th holes, he bogeyed the 15th hole. Neeraj finished the back nine at 2 under 32. Vishnu birdied the ninth hole to finish the front nine at 1-under 35 to move into second place. Dharan's Balbhadra finished the front nine at 4 under 32.
On the amateur side, Suman Periyar topped Sundar Rai by 2 strokes with an even par 140 overall. He shot a 2-under 68. Sundar scored a total of 2 over 142. He finished with a 4-over 74 on Thursday. 21 professionals and 8 amateur golfers made the cut. On the
professional side, Ramesh Adhikari, Deepak Magar, Tham Bahadur Rai, Dal Bahadur Lama, Krishnaman Rajbahak, Yuvraj Bhujel, Sanjay Lama, Surya Prasad Sharma and Sabin Sapkota made it to the last 18 holes. On the amateur side, Ram Tamang, Suresh Tamang, Wise Sunuwar, Jitendra Rai, Kishore Basnet and Kazi Rai have made the cut.
