Tribhuvan Army Football Club, which is considered to be the title contender, has been eliminated from the quarter-finals of the first Jhapa Cup football tournament being held in Birtamode.
Army was eliminated after losing 2-0 to Salhesh Yuva Club of Siraha on Monday. Salhesh, who participated for the first time in the tournament in Jhapa, secured the semi-final by defeating Army.
Abhi Lama and Aditya Shakya scored in Salhesh's win. In the 18th minute of the game, Abhi scored and gave Salhesh the lead. Army goalkeeper Vikesh Kuthu could not save the ball that he shot from the middle of the field. Kuthu fell on the ground and the ball entered the post. Aditya beat the goalkeeper Kuthu and scored a spectacular goal on the ball that two army defenders could not clear.
In the 37th minute of the game, Salhesh's Zorah Glory's powerful shot from the box hit the right post and was denied a further scoring opportunity.
Army kept the ball position but could not score. In the 20th minute of the match, Army's Niraj Bhujel could not take advantage of the opportunity in the opponent's box. His low shot was easily controlled by Salhesh goalkeeper Deep Karki.
Army supporters were disappointed when Ayush Timilsina's header failed in the 55th minute. Referee Shyam Danuwar also red carded Army captain Bharat Khawas after the match. Player of the match was Abhi Lama of Salhesh. He got a prize of 10,000 rupees.
On Tuesday, the second quarter-final will be contested between India's GTA Darjeeling and Rashtriya Jagriti Club Itahari. To encourage the game while making it exciting, Birtamode's Mahendra Ratna Stores are giving away a Himstar TV to one lucky viewer every day.
