Nepal Premier League (NPL) has become a celebration for cricket lovers. Eight teams representing seven provinces are playing in the league, which attracts spectators from all provinces. There is a crowd of spectators every day at the Trivi International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur to support their team.
Due to the participation of foreign players and others, NPL is garnering discussion not only at the national level but also at the international level.
One of the reasons NPL is so popular is audience participation. Children, from the young to the elderly, have reached the ground to watch the game and cheer on their team. Some of these spectators have come to Kathmandu from various districts of the seven provinces. One such audience is a couple, Damodar and Sunita Thapaliya. Thapalia couple came to Kathmandu from Chitwan to support Chitwan Rhinos. Damodar, who is 55 years old, says, "We bought tickets to watch the game in Chitwan. We watched the game for the first time on Tuesday.
Chitwan Rhinos have played 5 games till Wednesday, in which they have won three and lost two. Chitwan was defeated by Lumbini Lions in Tuesday's match watched by Thapalia. Chitwan is playing well so far. Therefore, the possibility of being in the top four is strong," he said, supporting his team. He feels that it is like a celebration of the game when the teams of all the seven provinces are playing at one place. "It feels good to have people from seven provinces sitting in the same stadium and having fun," he said.
He used to play football and badminton and now his life partner Sunita has accompanied him to watch cricket. The wife is not very interested in the game. But after I watched, she also supported me,' he said, 'I also used to explain the game and introduce the players.' Thapalia says that it is fun to watch one ball after another in cricket. He also has the experience that in a 20-over game, batting and bowling in one over can change the outcome of the game. How many runs now? What to do now? He said.
In the NPL, it is seen in the audience that they are happy with their team's victory and continue to support them even when they lose. Came to watch NPL for the first time. "I feel very happy when Lumbini wins," says 18-year-old Ankita Bhattarai, who supports Lumbini Lions. She also watched the second match between Karnali Yaks and Pokhara Avengers on Tuesday.
21-year-old Janachandra Bisht, who lives in Kirtipur from Kalikot, has not missed watching NPL matches. He came to the field for the first time to support Karnali Yaks on Tuesday and said, "I am constantly watching all the games of Karnali." Bisht said that such competitions should be organized continuously and this will also inspire the players to continue playing the game. NPL is looking good. Such a competition should be organized continuously,' he said, 'other sports should also be organized like this.'
Pritam Baral of Virgunj who is playing cricket also said that this kind of competition should be held at home ground. "All games are going well. Big players from outside are playing in the first season," he said. "NPL has become a big tournament. It is necessary to hold a similar competition in all provinces.'
The attraction of children in NPL is also increasing. 11-year-old Cursiv Dhamala and 8-year-old Priyans Bhattarai from Sudurpaschim Kailali who came to watch cricket with their family were very excited to watch their team play. Cursive said, 'I am a supporter of Far West. Even though there is no match of Far Paschim on Tuesday, I came to watch the match of other teams. He has a good knowledge of cricket. Having watched the match between Lumbini and Chitwan, he says, 'I understand everything about who took wickets, who scored how many runs in cricket. The power of Lumbini was also high. Lumbini took a good catch.'
Rishav Pandey, who came to support Pokhara Avengers, also looked excited to watch the match with Karnali. I have been watching all the matches of Pokhara so far. It was disappointing to lose the first two games. But it has also made a good comeback,' says he, who lives in Syangja.
Aakash Bomb, who came to watch the game, says that the NPL is a lot of fun. He belongs to Mugu and is a supporter of Karnali. Anand Upadhyay, who came from Jumla Ghar and lives in Kathmandu to support Karnali with him, says, "I have come to support with full enthusiasm." Also, Nimisha Dahal, who was coming out after the match in Chitwan and Lumbini, said that she got to know friends from different places in NPL. "This game is very fun," she said, "It has made me get to know friends from different places." Far West Royals are at the top of the table with 8 points after the matches till Wednesday. Even though Janakpur Bolts have 8 points, they are in second place due to their run rate. Although Chitwan Rhinos and Karnali Yaks have the same 6 points, they are ranked third and fourth respectively on the basis of run rate. Kathmandu Gurkhaz is in fifth position with 4 points. Lumbini Lions, Pokhara Avengers and Biratnagar Kings with the same 2 points are sixth, seventh and eighth respectively on the basis of run rate.
