The National 'B' Chess Championship tournament has started in Bhaktapur on Tuesday under the joint initiative of Nepal Buddhichal Federation and Bhaktapur District Buddhichal Association.

Top 40 male and 20 female players have participated in the tournament which was inaugurated by Mayor Basudev Thapa of Surya Vinayak Municipality. Mayor Thapa said that because Bhaktapur has been developing and advancing intellectually, Surya Vinayak Municipality has become an investment environment.

9 male and 9 female players who will be selected through the National B competition will play the national championship with the top three players of the Nepalese champions. The 25th National and 10th Women's National Championships will be held in the second week of January.

In the first round for women, Shanti Dhimal, an Olympian from Dhanusha, suffered an unexpected defeat against Poonam Prasai from Jhapa. Vinita Kapali of Kirtipur, Sushila Gurung of Parsa, Lakshmi Kandel of Chitwan, Isha Giri Nayuma Magar and Nihana Shrestha scored 1 point each.

On the men's side, Purushottam Silwal of Makwanpur, FM Rijendra Rajbhandari of Kathmandu, Ashish Phuyal of Dolakha, Rahul Choupradhan of Banepa, Susan Acharya, Dhiren Rai, Sanuraj Vajracharya of Lalitpur, FM Rupesh Jaiswal of Rautahat, Prakash Chandra Nepal of Jhapa, CM Milan Lama of Hetaunda won their matches.

Niken Kusatha of Bhaktapur, Suroj Maharjan of Lalitpur, CM Naveen Tandukar of Kathmandu, Premkrishna Maharjan, Rajesh Kashpati of Bhaktapur, Sanubhai Maharjan of Lalitpur, Vinay Thapa and Prasit Khanal have registered victory.
