Nepal has achieved historic success in Davis Cup, a competition called 'The World Cup of Tennis'. Nepal has leapfrogged from Group 5 of the Asia/Oceania region in Manama, Bahrain. After stopping hosts Bahrain on the court of Polytechnic University in Isa Town on Saturday, Nepal moved up to the upper group 4. In the playoff competition for promotion, Nepal won 2-0 against Bahrain.
15 countries including Nepal competed in this group. From that two teams would be promoted to Group 4. While competing in four groups, Nepal made it to the playoffs after defeating Guam and Brunei in Group 'A'. Hosts Bahrain have been drawn behind Yemen, Tajikistan and Bangladesh in Group D. The Philippines was the next team to be promoted. The team beat Northern Mariana Islands 2-1.
Bahrain is a team that has been playing Davis Cup since 1989. He has participated four times in Group '2' of Asia/Oceania region. Nepal has participated in the Davis Cup only for the second time.
After winning both the singles matches, the Nepalese players did not have to enter the doubles competition. In the first match, Nepal's second ranked player Abhishek Bastola lost against Bahrain's Yusuf Quaid in a set of 6-4, 6-1. This was Yusuf's 10th participation in the Davis Cup since 2010. Abhishek won the match in 1 hour and 52 minutes against the experienced opponent.
Nepal's first ranked Pradeep Khadka won over Bahrain's Elias Abdul Jalil in a set of 6-4, 6-1. Born in Manama, Elias is also a player who has been playing Davis Cup since 2016. Pradeep won the match in 1 hour 31 minutes. This is the second appearance of both Abhishek and Pradeep in the Davis Cup.
Player Abhishek said that defeating an experienced team like Bahrain in the decisive match and reaching the upper division is a historic achievement for Nepal. He said, "This should be considered a historic day for Nepali tennis." It is our big goal to reach the upper division by beating the experienced Bahrahan who are also the hosts in the playoffs. We did not let our performance waver amid the hooting of the home fans.'
Abhishek is unbeaten in the Davis Cup. He had won all three of his singles matches last year. Even now they have won all three games. This time, Nepal defeated Guam 2-1 and Bunai 3-0 in the group stage. Guam has been playing in the Davis Cup since 2018. It was Brunei's 16th Davis Cup appearance. Pranav Khanal, Hrithik Rana and Pranav Manandhar participated in the Nepali Davis Cup team along with Abhishek and Pradeep. It is the first Davis Cup tour of two Pranavs.
