Issuing a statement on Monday, President Thapa said, “I have a question for the government—why did the situation arise where shots had to be fired, resulting in civilian deaths? In such a sensitive situation that could affect social harmony, the state should have acted with greater restraint, vigilance, and responsibility. The government should have assessed the situation in time and taken sufficient coordination, security alertness, and caution to prevent the incident. The fact that the situation escalated to the point where shots were fired and lives were lost is a serious security lapse on the part of the government. The government must answer for this and take responsibility for the incident. Not only should the heads of security agencies be changed, but the investigation must also be proper and impartial.”
He has also demanded an immediate, impartial, independent, and credible investigation into the incident and the public disclosure of the facts. He has emphasized that there should be no delay in providing treatment to the injured and necessary support to the families of the deceased, and that the situation in the affected area should be managed in an extremely sensitive and responsible manner to maintain peace, security, and public trust and to prevent the situation from becoming more complicated.
He has also urged the general public to maintain restraint and harmony. The statement reads: “I sincerely appeal to all local residents, community organizations, civil society, political parties, and everyone to refrain from any rumors or provocations, to help prevent the situation from worsening, and to contribute to maintaining social harmony.”
