Former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has remarked that the country’s democratic system is in a “hijacked” state, saying that instead of strengthening it, there is a need to restore it.
He made this comment while addressing a program organized in Kathmandu on the occasion of the 48th Memorial Day of Pushpa Lal, the founding General Secretary of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP). He stated that elections alone do not provide a guaranteed foundation for democracy. Oli said that democracy can be measured based on the situation, objectives, and environment in which elections are held. Noting that regular elections are held in various countries but democracy remains weak or hijacked, Oli remarked that Nepal too has reached a similar state.
He described last year’s Gen-Z movement in Bhadra as a violent incident and commented that a legitimate government was overthrown in an illegitimate manner.
“The democracy brought through a long struggle, sacrifice, and penance has in fact been hijacked. Today, what is needed is not the strengthening of democracy, but its restoration,” he said. “Elections alone do not make democracy. Elections are held in various countries, but democracy remains hijacked. There is no real democracy in many countries. In our country, there is no need to bite your tongue just to speak. On Bhadra 23 and 24, actions were taken that caused terrible damage, killing, arson. Such things did not happen during the struggle against the Rana regime. The homes of the Ranas were not set on fire. Even in 2007 BS, palaces were not burned.”
He said that such things did not happen even during the 2006/07 movement. “The Maoists chose the path of violence as the appropriate way to seize power, but they did not engage in such arson, looting, vandalism, and terrorizing activities to keep society under control through fear and terror,” he said. Oli also accused the government of being intent on keeping society under the control of terror and fear.
