UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has instructed his party's elected MPs to play an effective role in lawmaking. Addressing a gathering of people's representatives at the federal, provincial and local levels on Sunday, he instructed them to strengthen the parliamentary front.
'The number may not be enough to make laws in parliament, but our debates and amendments should be reflected in making the right laws,' he said. 'To make the parliamentary role effective, a department of experts will be formed at the federal, provincial and local levels.'
He also instructed them to play a role in parliament by studying and researching. 'It is not effective to just rely on what others have explained. Experts will show the way. We write everything down and do not have to present it in parliament. If we have the determination, we can gain knowledge,' he added. 'We have to be careful and look at the sources ourselves.' If the party tries to reach out to the people and address them, it can gain popularity.'
He suggested that the party should speak in parliament based on its policies and principles. 'We should speak based on the party, policies and principles. It is not a matter of how many people there are. The problem has been raised by the people. We will go as far as we can based on the truth and facts,' he added.
He also accused the government of cheating the metered rate victims by making an agreement. 'The government has cheated the metered rate victims once. They will find out later,' he said.
Oli said that the government has caused pain to the poor by increasing taxes on some items. 'Price hikes and tax increases drown the poor,' he said.
