National Independent Party MP Shristi Bhattarai has demanded that permanent and safe housing be ensured for squatters and landless people in the country. In a meeting of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, MP Bhattarai also said that there are incidents that raise serious questions about the government's pre-disaster management.
MP Bhattarai said that the government should get involved in the management of housing for squatters and landless people. 'The work of verifying the real landless and squatters is proceeding in a procedural manner,' she said, 'This process should be completed in a quick, transparent and impartial manner and permanent and safe housing should be ensured for the real victims.' She also said that there should be no delay in providing housing to squatters and landless citizens in the name of process.
MP Bhattarai has also raised the issue of the Kirtipur-based shelter for squatters being submerged in the parliament. "As I speak in this parliament, the pain of those young children, elderly parents and families who spent the night in fear is still fresh in my mind. The incident of the Kirtipur holding shelter is not only a natural disaster but also an incident that raises serious questions about the safety and management of our disaster preparedness shelters," she said. "It is unacceptable for citizens who have been rescued from danger to be put at risk again. The government needs to immediately provide safe places for the affected families and review the safety standards of such holding centers."
The government had picked up the families from various squatter settlements in Kathmandu and placed them in Kirtipur. Which was flooded.
